If you’ve been focusing on a the perception of an area – whether a full time income space, bed room or perhaps entryway, you might believe that some aspects of the area don’t quite fit. Or possibly the space lacks impact?

We spoken to famous interior designer Kelly Wearstler about using scale in interior planning. Famous on her dramatic but liveable schemes, she offers her invaluable insight, below.
1. USE SCALE To Produce CONTRAST
‘When dealing with scale inside a room, what you’re really attempting to do is produce a beautiful tension,’ states Kelly Wearstler. ‘It’s a lot more interesting to pair a sizable sofa having a smaller sized side table than have all the feaures arranged.’
2. VARY FURNITURE HEIGHTS
‘Looking at heights of furnishings are essential. Pair side tables of various heights, a lesser one around 14 inches high with one that’s maybe 26 inches. Getting different heights results in a depth of field and much more interest towards the eye,’ states Kelly Wearstler.
3. Highlight A BED
‘In bedrooms, for those who have a sizable bed inside a room that is not too large, pairing it with two tiny, delicate side tables can help create a small bed room feel bigger.
‘For bigger bedrooms, beds can appear quite from scale, so I enjoy design beds that have a bigger bit of upholstery or wood around it, emphasizing the furnishings, which makes it appear even wider and making certain the interest is around the bed because the primary element within the room.’
4. CONSIDER HIERARCHY
After I design, I consider hierarchy. What’s the largest piece within the room – the couch? Your bed? A bit of art? There isn’t any wrong or right answer, but after you have your largest piece in your mind you can begin to consider how you can create that contrast with smaller sized pieces.’
5. CONSIDER LIGHTING WHEN Having Fun With SCALE
‘Lighting is so important and a very good method of having fun with scale. Oversized chandeliers are a good place to start, i then love sconces after which getting lamps on the table uplighting a sculpture or artwork.’
