A 1950s bungalow became a modern barn-style home – all ready for Christmas

Driving beyond the 1950s bungalow which was to get her home, Danielle Tolson’s first thought was it had become ‘fairly unsightly’. However the building was on the good plot and looked robust, so she and her husband, Bobby, couldn’t eliminate a viewing. The household was quickly outgrowing the stone cottage these were residing in at that time, despite a number of extensions and refurbs. ‘With two boys, we understood we’d require more space once they were older, and youngsters appear to come back home after college to their twenties nowadays,’ states Danielle.

Travelling the bungalow, her initial reluctance started to fade. ‘I felt comfortable that people could create an upstairs and began sketching plans which, 2 yrs on, were virtually what we should were left with,’ Danielle states.

Danielle and husband Bobby’s radical remodel of this humble bungalow elevated its roof and switched it into among the world’s best homes, an uplifting barn-style home that now stretches proudly as much as yet another floor.

Danielle isn’t any stranger to creating things cozy and comfy – together with her business partner Helen McRae, she runs Tolly McRae, selling luxury, 100% natural blankets, throws, towels and sheepskin rugs. As Danielle launched into the large building project, individuals all-important finishing touches appeared a lengthy way off – first she’d to produce the setting on her own interpretation of contemporary farmhouse style.

In order to save budget, she labored towards the original footprint from the bungalow, with the thought of making it a barn-style house. This meant costs like moving drains and digging foundations were stored low, and also the garden was undisturbed. ‘It still switched out to become a massive project,’ Danielle states. ‘I thought we’re able to reside in it while an upstairs was added, however that was rather naïve. We wound up relocating with my mother throughout the seven-month build.’

The rooftop came off, the plumbing and electrics were stripped out and also at some point there were only four walls standing. ‘We built the walls up just by over three ft and did a hip-to-gable conversion with vaulted ceiling throughout. This needed about 30 steels but we maximized the upstairs space on the floor and bending how big the home,’ states Danielle.

If the project has you considering the way you could remodel your house, it’s worth searching into how you can commission a designer.

There have been a few things I usually wanted for that house, that have been black cladding and steel home windows,’ states Danielle. ‘We eventually got planning permission for that cladding but made the decision from the steel home windows because they’re not thermally efficient. Rather, we made the decision to take a position heavily within the home windows, which are constructed with hardwood clad in aluminium, knowing they’d look impressive, provide good insulation and wish minimal maintenance.’

Family Room

Inside, Danielle wanted to produce a modern space, with big, light and airy rooms but without them feeling stark and cold. There are many inspiring family room ideas within the new open-plan layout. She stored to some limited colour pattern of white-colored, beige, gray, black and gold, with a lot of blonde wood. She restored the initial 1950s parquet flooring but replaced it with porcelain tiles in high-traffic areas like the hallway and kitchen.

Danielle wanted a plan that might be comfortable for working and using. The living area showcases a monochrome palette while texture adds interest. To include warmth and texture, Danielle layered furniture with natural textiles for example made of woll throws and sheepskin rugs, that provide a general sense of coziness, especially at Christmas.

KITCHEN

Your kitchen would be a real task for Danielle and she or he created lots of budget-friendly solutions and practical kitchen ideas. ‘I understood when we would remain on budget, I’d have to source cabinets, worktops, knobs, handles and shelving online,’ she states. ‘I designed and planned your kitchen myself and spent about 2 yrs searching on and on direct to manufacturers for the greatest deals.’
